Chapter 6

Doug found sleep to be an elusive prospect. He had remained indoors since returning to New York the night before, unwilling to confront Ava and the discussion he knew they needed to have. He found himself having flashes of home, recalling the good parts, the good days when his father would take him on a ride along the slow path of the Fisk River. He can sense the tranquil environment, the songs of the jays flitting through the sky, and the soft whisper of the trees singing aloud to themselves. It had always been there, each time they rode by; Doug on Monty, his father on Weston.

They would often walk for a bit and let the horses drink from the river before they would ride on again, easing through the pathway at a leisurely pace. Once they came to the slope that would take them back onto the ranch, his father would spur Weston and a race would ensue between Weston and Monty. Weston would win by a hair’s breadth, always. Sometimes, Doug thought Weston slowed down towards the end just to make sure Monty wasn’t too far behind. He found out later that his father always made Weston slow down, the same way he always allowed him to win when they played chess or shot hoops in the backyard.

The words they shared on those long walks along the water trail flooded his memory. It was on those walks that his father showed him the extent of the ranch. Where it began, where it ended, and where some others began. He never forgot but returning to a town where all that is left for him is a large ranch with scant animals isn’t something he is very excited about.

There was a loud knock, and even before he opened the door Doug heard the booming voice and the southern twang, he knew it was Liam.

“Hey, man. How are you holding up?” he asks as he walked into the room.

“So, so,” Doug says, but before he is done speaking, Liam had enveloped him in a tight hug.

“I know what this shit feels like, man. Death keeps on taking and taking from us, but we are stronger. We will get through this. Just breathe”

“Thanks, man.”

Liam slaps his back and pulls away, looking him over, seeing the dilemma in his eyes, and wonders what is bothering him.

“I would suggest we go out and have a few drinks, but then I don’t know who you will fuck if we happen to get drunk,” Liam jokes. Doug glared at him.

“How is she? Have you seen her?”

“She is alright, or so I think. She is a tough woman, never allows much to get to her.”

“We’ve been friends for so long. I might have messed up a good thing.”

“Don’t fret too much about it. You are both adults who felt like bumping uglies. It isn’t a crime. All you have to do is talk things over.”

“You and I have something of our own to talk over.”

“Don’t tell me you nailed a farm girl in the barn.
